Teaching kids to love food
Teaching kids to grow their own healthy food is fun and rewarding. I teach preschool in my home and my kids and I try to grow as much of their food as possible. It’s amazing to watch kids learn how to plant, harvest, and tend their own fruits and vegetables. We grow chemical free so my kids can have the best food possible for their delicate, growing bodies.
Our goal is to learn to garden well enough that someday we’ll be growing most of it. So far, we have had a lot of trial and a lot of error. In gardening, as in life, there is a learning curve. Add to that Mother Nature and how she does whatever she wants, and you have a recipe for some great opportunities to learn.
Gardening with Kids
Why do I want to grow their food? The garden presents so many opportunities for kids to learn about life cycles, colors, motor skills, numbers, bugs, plants, animals, and so much more in addition to having one of the most amazing sensory experiences in the world for kids. Sensory stimulation is the number one way kids learn when they are very young. Can you imagine immersing children in a place like the garden? There is nothing that can teach them more.
The current food supply today is teeming with chemicals, additives, preservatives, and way too much sugar, salt and unhealthy fat. Our food is being killed by over processing. In addition, there are innumerable chemicals sprayed on food during growing such as pesticides, herbicides that disturb growth and cause people to become ill. I know children’s smaller bodies are much more sensitive to the effects of these poisons than even our vulnerable bodies. We need to make a change in our food supply!
Add Kids and Dirt = Fun
The kids LOVE working in the garden. They LOVE picking their own food. They love planting seeds and watering and the wonder of watching the plants mature and produce. The magic experience of germination is awe inspiring to me even after watching it thousands of times. I just can’t get over how wicked cool it is!
