Home Chef is a home delivery service that offers everything you need to cook a complete meal for your family. Instead of going out to eat or ordering take-out, you can create a restaurant quality meal at home. You select the meals you like, the number of portions, and Home Chef will mail you the ingredients and recipes to cook meals at home. Home Chef recently provided me with several meal deliveries to try out their service. Let me share with you what I liked about their meal kit service and what needs improvement.
Weekly Meal Service
Each week Home Chef offers a variety of meals you can select for $9.95 per serving. Shipping is free with an order of $40 or more. Otherwise shipping is $10. Additionally, you can order weekly smoothies and seasonal fruit for $4.95 per serving each. Home Chef provided several meals for us to try and I paid for others. I selected these 10 meals to try with our family.
Home Meal Delivery
When your Home Chef delivery arrives, it comes packed in an insulated box with ice packs.
Each meal includes a recipe with detailed instructions.
Ingredients packed together in the portions/amounts needed for the recipe. If the recipe calls for beef, chicken, or seafood, that is stored separate from the other ingredients.
What I Liked About Home Chef:
The website is laid out really well and provides a lot of information about the meals offered each week. This information makes it easy to select the meals/recipes you want to be delivered. You can plan for up to 5 weeks in advance, so whether you meal plan weekly or monthly, this site can help.
Ingredients come prepackaged. All ingredients come in the correct proportions and are packaged by recipe. I took the Oktoberfest Pork Medallions meal camping with us and this feature made it really easy to cook meals outdoors.
Recipes are easy to follow. The directions are simple and the images that accompany the instructions compliment the written directions. You can use the recipe cards again and again. In my first order, a 3-ring binder was provided to store the recipe cards.
Well Proportioned: I found the proportions were generous. We tend to eat smaller portions of beef and pork and found that I could increase the portions by adding an additional vegetable or salad to the meal.
What needs Improvement:
Better Quality Control: Produce wasn’t always fresh. In 2 of my 3 orders, I received produce that was molded or wilted greens. I contacted customer service once and they credited the meal, but I still had to go out to buy produce.
Better Communication: I received the wrong order one week. A meal was substituted without me knowing it. That would have been fine, but I received the wrong protein with the meal. So it threw things off.
I really liked the concept of Home Chef. I love the recipes they put together and I still use the recipes from the orders I received. Unfortunately, with bad produce on 2 occasions and the wrong meal on another, it is hard for me to recommend the service.
If you have tried Home Chef, I’d love to hear your experience with them.
